(TWO)

My Homesteading Delusion. Dream. I meant to say dream.

I bought land, online, sight unseen, back in 2020. I paid it off after just three years. Then, six months after paying it off, I went there and found it. It was going to be the perfect off-grid site. Only, maybe too far off-grid. I didn’t go back. Then 2024 Christmas came around and I purchased my second property. I showed it to my significant other, and he agreed the location was darn-near perfect. So we took a long drive, towing a camper we had bartered for, and promptly dropped it onto the wrong property without even realizing it until we got back home that night. As soon as we could, we drove some hours to move it onto the correct plot of land, and began our process.

I had such big plans back then. I wanted chickens, goats, a vegetable garden, a well, a house, etc, etc, etc.

Yeah, well, I still have to buy all the milk, eggs, meat, and vegetables at the regular grocery store.

I actually ended up changing my mind on most of my wishes, after learning how much our friends were spending on goat feed, chicken feed, water, etc. And how difficult it had been for them to even find someone willing to … um… slaughter their hog and package it up to fill their freezer. So no, I am no longer interested in raising any farm animals!

Instead, we focused on the actual necessities for living in a rural area away from the cities. It’s basically survivable, and could even let others park a camper or two on the other corners of the lot. If I were absolutely made of cash, I’d fix up my other property and rent it out long-term to some survivalist type. Only because, I not only need to clear a driveway and at least part of the plot of land itself, I am also required to install a culvert of some sort. So, that one just sits there amongst all the other empty fields in that area, just waiting. As one person eloquently stated, “I could see two, maybe three houses from there.”

If anybody is reading this (who knows, maybe somebody might read this someday), I just happen to have some land available for rent. If you are a homesteading type, a hunting/fishing/hiking/roughing-it type. It’s located very near to the entrance of an absolutely enormous natural area with all of those activities available.

I’ve been noticing that a lot of plots of land with homesteading potential have been selling rather quickly, although not in the area that this one is located. To give you an idea, picture this: You’re in the most remote, least populated, and poorest county in the state. You purchase land and your monthly payment is just $200/month. Maybe $250-$300 depending on exact location. And you got five whole acres for that monthly payment! But beware what type of house you choose to build! Because even here your house can be valued at $400,000 or more.

Those poor, remote, rural counties still collect taxes. So why buy when you can rent? A rental in an area like this is as easy as $100-$200 per month, plop down a camper, and voila! You’re living the dream.

What’s this? Is this? Is this a form?

I just now realized that this is probably not going to receive any responses at all. “I just thought-” Well, that’s what I get for thinking now, isn’t it?
